January and February have definitely been busy months for the SK3 class! They began with participating in Chinese New Year activities in collaboration with the SK4 class. The students learned to make paper plate drums, participated in a storytime activity, did traditional Chinese brush painting, cut out different Chinese characters and also made Chinese rice noodles from scratch! The students really enjoyed learning about the Year of the Rooster and all of the traditional elements of celebrating Chinese New year.
They also explored the new Kindergarten unit on Creative Expression by learning about printmaking! First, the students learned about positive and negative images by creating prints with different parts of their hands, then lifting the prints from their creations. They also explored print collages by using paint, natural and found objects to create relief prints. They were able to choose the clearest prints and use them to create an object collage. The students created a final printmaking work by carving into a Styrofoam tray with a chopstick or pen to create a picture, then using a brayer to roll paint on to the tray while making sure there were no globs of paint. Lastly, the students put heavy paper over the tray, put pressure on it and rubbed it with their hands, and lifted the paper to create their beautiful print!
All of the SK classes had the opportunity to go on a field trip to the Macau Science Centre at the end of January. SK3 had a great time watching a play about proper dental care and learning about underwater ocean life through a movie at the Imax theatre!
